Your Rights as a Patient
Your health care practitioner is committed to providing the best
possible evaluation and treatment and together with you, to
positively contribute to your recovery and towards independence.
Your rights with regard to your health care practitioner
In order to practice, your practitioner needs to be registered
with the HPCSA. You have the right to enquire about the status
of his or her registration and request to view his or her
practice card (this must be for the current year).
You have the right to request information about the training and
experience of your practitioner and the principles and
procedures of his or her profession and its scope of practice.
You have the right to request a second opinion from another
health professional should you be concerned about your diagnosis
or treatment.
Your practitioner may not treat you without your consent or
should you become incapable, that of your family or guardian.
You have the right to report any behaviour which you consider to
be unethical or unprofessional to the Health Professions Council
of South Africa.
Your rights with regard to your treatment
You have the right to be treated with respect, irrespective of
your age, culture, religion, financial situation or political
affiliation.
You have the right to be treated with respect and dignity and
your need for privacy should be respected at all times.
You, and your carers, have the right to be consulted and to
participate in your assessment, treatment planning and its
implementation.
You have the right to be fully informed about the nature,
content, duration and effect of your treatment, the risks
involved and alternative therapies, and to receive regular
feedback on your progress. You are entitled to access to your
file and a comprehensive report.
You have the right to end treatment at any time and need not
participate in any procedure or activity which makes you feel
uncomfortable.
You have the right to expect that your practitioner will keep
your personal information confidential and obtain your consent
for disclosure of information at all times.
You have the right to receive information about your illness or
treatment in a language of your choice.
You have the right to know what fees you will be charged and
given payment options.
You also have the right to complain about health care services
that either violate your rights to good health or breach ethical
standards, to have your complaint investigated and to receive a
full response thereafter.
